Germany Edge Ghana 2-1 as Nagelsmann Eyes World Cup Squad
With the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway, the atmosphere at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart looked less like a standard international friendly and more like the final rehearsal for the tournament this summer. In front of a packed crowd, the German national football team edged Ghana with a 2-1 victory. Although Die Mannschaft secured only a narrow victory against the resilient Ghana national football team, head coach Julian Nagelsmann continues to evaluate and shape the final squad for the upcoming World Cup.
The Breakthrough and the Scare
The match began with Germany controlling the tempo and dominating possession. However, scoring against the tough Ghanaian “Black Stars” defense was difficult until the waning moments of the first half. Just as the first half was expected to end scoreless, Germany was awarded a penalty, following a handball in the box. Kai Havertz stepped up and converted the spot-kick, giving Germany a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Germany tried to maintain their lead while Ghana fought back fiercely. Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute when Abdul Fatawu Issahaku capitalized on a defensive lapse to level the score. As the clock ticked toward the 90-minute mark, Leroy Sané burst down the flank with a trademark driving run, cutting past defenders before delivering a perfectly timed pass into the box. Deniz Undav, who was waiting in position, restored Germany’s lead to 2-1 by scoring the decisive winner to seal the 2-1 victory.
The Karl Factor
While Undav sealed the victory, the performance that captured the most attention came from the rising star Lennart Karl. The teenage sensation who has set the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League ablaze for FC Bayern Munich this season made his much-anticipated entrance in the second half. Karl nearly marked a debut with a spectacular goal, rising high to meet a cross with a header that rattled the crossbar.
During the post-match press conference, head coach Julian Nagelsmann shared his optimistic view on Karl’s future. “Lenny made a great impression in both games. He’s a very good player. That was a small step forward.” He added, “Now I hope he stays humble, keeps pushing, and gets a few more appearances at Bayern Munich. Of all the young players we’ve had here so far, he’s been one of the best.”
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
While international friendlies rarely define a team’s World Cup fate, they often provide valuable insight into strengths, weaknesses, and tactical adjustments. Although Germany needed time to break through offensively, they were largely dominant throughout the match against Ghana.
After sealing the victory, Germany now has a seven-match winning streak under Nagelsmann. This is Germany’s longest streak since the eight consecutive wins achieved under former head coach Hansi Flick between September 2021 and March 2022. Germany is expected to play additional warm-up friendlies, including matches against Finland and the United States, before the World Cup begins.
At the World Cup, Germany will face Curaçao on June 14 at NRG Stadium in Houston for their first match of the group stage. With the Bayern Munich core of Kimmich, Sané, and the emerging Karl leading the way, Germany appears ready to be one of the tournament’s biggest attractions on American soil.
