USMNT Hit by Injuries as Robinson, Richards Ruled Out
The United States National Team (USMNT) defenders Miles Robinson and Chris Richards have sustained injuries, casting doubt over their availability for the remaining matches in the international window. According to the medical team, Miles Robinson has a groin injury, whereas Chris Richards will be out for the remaining games due to a knee problem. Now, with the absence of these two pillars, American defense is shaky and has few options in the remaining matches.
USSoccer.com officially announced, by the United States Soccer Federation, that Richards had played 76 minutes on March 19 for Crystal Palace in the English Premier League before arriving at USMNT training in Atlanta, where he subsequently reported knee issues that limited him for the remainder of the week. The statement added that the team was continuing to assess Richards in order to determine his availability for Tuesday’s match against Portugal. It was further confirmed that Robinson had sustained a minor groin injury during training, while Mauricio Pochettino stated that the former Atlanta United FC player was definitely ruled out for both matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
According to the latest reports, the USMNT is continuing to assess Richards’ condition to determine whether he will be fit for Tuesday’s match against Portugal. Following the uncertainty regarding the availability of these two, the team would have Tim Ream, Mark McKenzie, and Auston Trusty available. Mauricio Pochettino also stated that Joe Scally of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Tanner Tessmann of Olympique Lyonnais were being considered as options to fill in.
Mauricio Pochettino added that it was a difficult situation to assess and explain, noting that the player had featured on March 19 in Europe for Crystal Palace against AEK Larnaca in the Conference League. He explained that the player had reported knee issues on Monday after being assessed, had trained partially on Tuesday, but was unable to complete the session on Wednesday and was still feeling discomfort. He added that while the staff hoped the issue was not serious, the player would be unavailable for the match against Belgium and was also unlikely to be fit in time for the fixture against Portugal.
Belgium Dominates USMNT 5-2, Defensive Shortcomings Costly
The absence of the two defenders had an immediate impact, as the United States suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to European giants Belgium. The game played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday was dominated by Belgium, leaving the US men’s national team no chance. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is the current manager of the USMNT, has commented on the defeat. Pochettino stated after the game in Atlanta that he viewed the result as a good reality check for the team, adding that it was the right moment to experience such a situation in order to improve. He further emphasized that improvement was necessary.
According to the match commentary, the USA had taken an early lead against the world’s ninth-ranked team, with Weston McKennie scoring in front of a packed crowd in Atlanta. However, it was noted that after conceding, Belgium responded quickly with goals from Zeno Debast, Amadou Onana, and Charles De Ketelaere, along with a brace from substitute Dodi Lukebakio, while Patrick Agyemang scored a late consolation goal for the USA.
Christian Pulisic, the star of the USMNT, missed three clear scoring chances. His finishing has been far below his usual standard, and the same issues are seriously undermining his performances at AC Milan. According to the latest report, the Americans are set to remain in Atlanta for Tuesday’s friendly against fifth-ranked Portugal, who would be without injured superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
