Juan Soto Trolls Yankees, Deletes Comment After Fan Backlash
This week, New York Mets’ $765 million superstar Juan Soto did a bit of reminiscing on social media, posting throwbacks to his time with cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees, while also taking jabs at them to hype up the 2026 MLB season.
Soto started with an Instagram post about his single season (2024) with the Yankees, where he teamed up with 6x All-Star and 3x AL MVP Aaron Judge to form a terrific duo. The 4x All-Star and 6x Silver Slugger Award winner then added a comment under his former team’s post signaling that they miss him, highlighting the rollercoaster relationship he has with the fans.
Juan Soto Takes Jibe at Former Team, the New York Yankees; Sparking Fan Backlash
The Yankees’ social media team posted a hype video on Instagram ahead of their season opener against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, whom they thrashed 7-0. The video featured a montage meant to excite fans with some of the team’s best moments, but one specific clip caught the attention of eagle-eyed viewers.
Tucked into it was a slow-motion sequence showing Soto in the famous Pinstripes, swinging a devastating strikeout against Max Fried. He was clearly the only non-Yankees player highlighted in the video.
The 4x All-Star and 6x Silver Slugger Award winner, who keeps a close eye on his former club, commented: “😂😂😂 rent free,” under the post. But he quickly deleted it after sparking fan backlash.
In January, Soto sent the Pinstripe faithful into a frenzy by reposting a graphic of his and Yankees captain Aaron Judge’s 2024 stats. This made many wonder whether he missed the Bronx, including Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who joked about it in a recent interview.
Suto and Rodgers formed a devastating partnership in their single season together, combining for a staggering 99 home runs and leading the Yankees to the World Series.
But Soto left the team after the 2024 season, when he hit the open market in free agency. In a historic bidding war, arch-rivals the New York Mets secured him with a record-breaking, 15-year, $765 million deal.
The Yankees definitely miss his left-handed batting as the team seeks redemption after a 2025 season that saw them falter. Meanwhile, the Mets are under immense pressure to justify their merit following a playoff-less season.
Yankees Thrash Giants 7-0, and Mets Beat Pirates 11-7 in MLB 2026 Opening Day
The pinstripes spoiled the SF Giants’ home opener at Oracle Park on Wednesday night in a commanding 7-0 victory – marking the Yankees’ fifth straight Opening Day win. The Yankees exploded for five runs in the second inning off Giants starter Logan Webb (0-1), with Giancarlo Stanton singled (3-0), and Trent Grisham tripled (5-0). They added two more in the fifth on Stanton’s RBI single scoring Cody Bellinger (6-0), followed by Bryson Stott’s sacrifice fly to make it 7-0. Max Fried dominated with 6 ⅓ scoreless innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. But Judge went hitless for the first time on Opening Day.
The Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 2026 season opener, winning the game at Citi Field 11-7. In the first innings, the Mets erupted for five runs against Pirates ace Paul Skenes, who was pulled after facing nine batters and struggling with 37 pitches, 1 walk, 1 HBP, and 2 K’s.
Freddy Peralta earned the win for the Mets, throwing 80 pitches over the five innings despite an early HR. Mets bats included RBI from Baty and Bichette, while the Pirates got multi-hits from Lowe (3 RBI) and Gonzales (2 RBI).
The Yankees are playing a three-game series against the Giants and currently lead 1-0. They will face each other on March 27th and 28th in San Francisco. The Mets are up against the Pirates once more on March 29th, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals on March 31st.
The Subway Series, the four-game interleague set where the Mets and Yankees face each other, starts May 15-17 at Citi Field, with the return leg on September 11-14 at Yankee Stadium.
