UNC Fires Hubert Davis, Ends Carolina Family Coaching Era

UNC Fires Hubert Davis, Ends Carolina Family Coaching Era

North Carolina has fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons, ending a streak of hiring successors from the Carolina family that dates back to 1952. The decision follows consecutive first-round NCAA Tournament exits, including a 19-point collapse against VCU, which was the sixth-largest deficit overcome in the history of March Madness. Davis will receive a buyout exceeding $5 million.

Historic Shift at North Carolina Tar Heels Men’s basketball

It is the first time in seven decades that UNC is seeking a head coach beyond the Carolina Family. After Frank McGuire passed the torch to Dean Smith in 1961, Smith became the legendary coach and the standard for the Tar Heels; he won multiple championships and created a long-lasting legacy, which was passed on to Bill Guthridge. Guthridge’s departure was followed by former Tar Heel player Matt Doherty taking over the reins before passing over to Roy Williams. Williams led the Tar Heels to a trio of national championships before retiring in 2021, selecting and mentoring Davis as his successor.

The UNC athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, appreciated Davis’s contributions as a player, assistant coach, head coach, and community leader. In a statement, Davis said that he doesn’t want it to be his last coaching job and added that his goal is to coach again in the very near future. Davis, in his first season as head coach, guided the Tar Heels to the 2022 Final Four, resulting in two of the most iconic wins in the program’s history. However, UNC failed to live up to the standards, and the loss to VCU in the NCAA tournament marked VCU’s comeback in the tournament history and the largest in the first round.

UNC announced the change in leadership on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, less than a week after the Tar Heels blew a 19-point lead to VCU in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, marking a second straight year in which UNC was bounced in the first round. UNC announced that it would be conducting a nationwide search for the next coach, which will be aided by the search firm Turnkey ZRG.

Coaching Change Overview and Key Candidates

The top coaching candidates currently linked to the vacancy include T.J Otzelberger, considered a likely target, citing his elite defensive systems and a manageable $4 million buyout, contrasting sharply with the $18 million+ costs for other candidates. Given the track record of rapid program building and history as a UNC Washington player from 1994 to 1998, Mark Byington can be considered a very likely candidate.

Nate Oats, a strong contender whose Buyout will drop from $18 million on April 1, would potentially make him more accessible if negotiations occur before the date. Billy Donovan, a Hall of Fame former two-time NCAA champion at Florida, with a history as a college coach for 19 years, is equipped to aid UNC in adapting to modern college basketball. Meanwhile, others, including Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, Todd Golden, and Grant McCasland, are also on the list, though high buyout and program loyalty make their hires difficult.

The search led by the Athletic Director and executive associate, AD Steve Newmark, assisted by Turnkey ZRG, will consult an advisory group of former players and supporters. Brad Stevens, the former Butler coach and current Boston Celtics executive, has removed his name from consideration for the position. Additionally, on July  1, 2026, the AD will be transfer from Bubba Cunningham to Steve Newmark. However, the new coach’s first and most critical task will be to secure commitment from the top recruits and retain the program’s best players, setting the foundation for a return to national prominence.
