Messi to Start Argentina Send-Off Match Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Messi to Start Argentina Send-Off Match Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The eyes of the soccer world are fixed on Buenos Aires as Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed Monday that Lionel Messi will lead Argentina’s starting XI for their final home match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The reigning world champions will face the Zambia national football team in a highly anticipated send-off match tonight at the iconic La Bombonera.

This will be the final home appearance of the squad before they depart for North America to defend their title. The World Cup will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With Messi now 38 years old, the emotional weight surrounding the match has only intensified, as many fans believe it could be the legendary forward’s last major tournament.

The “Last Dance”

Although Messi has not officially confirmed whether he will play in the upcoming World Cup, Scaloni has shared his expectations during the press conference. “The important thing is that he comes and enjoys being at a World Cup, which, theoretically, will be his last,” Scaloni said. “We want him to enjoy it, because later on, you really miss playing in events like these.”

Messi himself has taken a measured approach when discussing the future. The veteran star has repeatedly said he is focusing on the present and taking his career “day by day,” balancing competitive ambitions with the physical demands that come with age. Messi lifted the World Cup for Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, ending the nation’s 36-year wait for the trophy.

Scaloni’s Ultimatum

Despite the excitement surrounding Messi’s return to the starting lineup, the mood within the Argentine camp is notably tense. Following the lackluster 2-1 victory over Mauritania in a recent friendly, a match where Messi notably started on the bench, Scaloni said he was not fully satisfied with the team’s performance.

“I am convinced that the team’s performance level is not what we saw the other day,” Scaloni said. “If we see that the team isn’t quite there, we’ll look for other options. But they deserve a vote of confidence.”

While Messi’s role is secure, Scaloni used the press conference to issue an ultimatum to the rest of the squad. The urgency is compounded by the recent loss of Joaquín Panichelli, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, leaving a void in the attacking rotation.

“I have the list pretty well figured out, but if performance levels aren’t up to par, we’ll take measures to ensure we bring the absolute best squad possible; we are striving for something as close to perfection as we can get,” Scaloni added. Argentina has already submitted a preliminary 55-player list, but the definitive 26-man squad must be finalized by the end of May.

The Road to the 2026 World Cup

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has begun, and the tournament is scheduled to kick off on June 11. As the championship is returning to American soil for the first time since 1994, the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time the competition will feature three host nations.

As Argentina prepares to defend its title, Messi remains the team’s central figure and captain, poised to lead the squad in his quest for a second consecutive trophy. Having led Inter Miami CF to an MLS Cup title in late 2025, Messi has already proven he can still dominate on American pitches.

Argentina will face Algeria in their first group match on June 16, but first, they must provide a performance at La Bombonera that proves they are ready to retain their throne.
