Here’s The Download On Pennsylvania’s First Betting App

Nearly one year after the Supreme Court opened the door for sports betting in Pennsylvania, the state finally took its first online bet.

SugarHouse Casino launched the live testing phase for its PA betting app. The Rush Street property worked with sports betting partner, Kambi, to put together an online product.

The PlaySugarHouse app began testing on Tuesday after receiving approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). The testing schedule is:

  • Tuesday, May 28: 4 p.m. to midnight
  • Wednesday, May 29: 2 p.m. to midnight
  • Thursday, May 30: noon to midnight

Once SugarHouse successfully passes these three testing sessions, the online betting app will likely be cleared for a full launch.

Meet PlaySugarHouse

While the SugarHouse product bears the same name as its New Jersey counterpart, there are some key differences.

The most obvious differences are a lack of iOS app and limited deposit options. Currently, the online sportsbook is only available on Android devices and via desktop. It is worth noting the desktop version of the sportsbook can be accessed via smartphones and tablets.

PlaySugarHouse has the initial deposit options of:

  • Credit Cards
  • PlaySugarHouse Prepaid Card
  • Cash at the SugarHouse Casino cage

Don’t worry, though, more deposit options will likely roll out in the near future, including PayPal and ACH.

PA bettors will need to create a new account for PlaySugarHouse PA. For those with an existing NJ account, you can use it to express sign up.

How do you place bets?

If you’re not familiar with how online betting works, there are a few things you should know.

First, you must be at least 21 years old to bet. The apps and the desktop version confirm that using some key pieces of information. Be prepared with:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • A partial Social Security number

If you are wondering why the apps need your SSN, it is to verify your identity and confirm you are old enough to play.

Second, you should know that you have to be physically located in Pennsylvania to bet. That means, if you are betting on your phone, you need to have your location enabled.

The apps use a method called triangulation to ensure on several fronts that you are in the state. Be aware that if you are near the state line, you may encounter some trouble logging on. In that case, contact customer support for help troubleshooting.

How do you get money on these PA apps?

Once you have an account, the next important step is getting money on the app so you can bet.

As mentioned above, deposit options are limited for the time being. Be aware that several banking institutions are still wary of gambling transactions. As a result, a credit card deposit may get declined.

Bettors in New Jersey seem to have the most success with is an e-wallet like Paypal. Information from ICE North America conference alerted us to the fact that PayPal was not going to be licensed in time for online casino launch. So while expected, it is still a bit disappointing.

Even so, remember there are additional options available though, including bringing cash to the SugarHouse Casino cage.

Once you have an account and deposited money on it, all that’s left is to get betting. If you need a rundown of basic betting, like in-play betting and parlays, we can help you get up to speed, so get reading.
