FanDuel Proclaims Team USA Winners, Pays Out Futures Bets Early

Placing its own wager on Team USA winning the FIFA Women’s Soccer World Cup even before the team met France, FanDuel Sportsbook paid off future bets on the team winning it all before two marquee rivals – the US and France – even met in the quarterfinals.

The wagers were paid out pre-emptively, meaning customers received money for their bet as if the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team had already won the entire tournament.

Future bets payout a bold move by FanDuel

Considering the US and its chief rival, France, were still four hours from playing on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in sweltering Paris and also that the final match isn’t scheduled until Sunday, July 7, the early payout was a bold move. It is not uncommon though. Last fall, FanDuel also paid out early on Alabama to win the College Football Playoffs national title.

The American women look like the team of destiny to take it all. Megan Rapinoe of the US  snapped in a penalty kick during the first five minutes of play on Friday and another goal deep into the second half.

But there’s a risk the US team falters. That means FanDuel could get stuck writing off the preemptive payouts and wagers on the eventual winner.

A $400,000 payout to PA bettors

FanDuel’s bold move meant an early $400,000 payday for online future bettors at 11 a.m ET on Friday.

If the US fails to win the World Cup, FanDuel will still payout all wagers on the winning team as per usual.

On the plus side, the move means a boost for the book’s public relations and marketing efforts and could add market share and attract new customers.

A bit of flag waving by FanDuel

And it allowed FanDuel to wave the flag even before the US v. France match, nicknamed The Final Before the Final.

FanDuel Sportsbook’s announcement began by saying they were “showing its Red, White and Blue support for the U.S Women’s National Soccer Team.

“Patriotism is at an all-time high and the experts at the FanDuel Sportsbook believe that Team USA will not only take down France on their home turf but will also eventually win the 2019 World Cup.”

Director of Risk and Trading for FanDuel Group John Sheeran doubled down:

We are paying out our customers early so they can just enjoy the game and not worry about advancing. All across America fans are supporting Team USA and showing their excitement at home, at work, and on social media, so we wanted to share our Team USA excitement and pride with our customers.

US Women’s Team fan favorite for betting

FanDuel had a special odds boost bet offer before the match for Rapinoe to score the first goal, jumping from +330 to +650 on a max bet of $50.

They had also offered an odds boost on Alex Morgan to score the first goal jumping from +400 to +500 on a max bet of $50.

The US team has been dominant throughout the tournament. They went undefeated record in the first round, with a record 18 goals. That in turn sharply upped the team’s profile and reshaped the odds with every match.

Elevated bettor interest moved the odds

Before the match with France, Team USA was -160 to qualify for the next round.

But at the start of the tournament, the US was +350 to win the tournament. Now Team USA is  -120 to take it all.

Other Pennsylvania sportsbooks also reported huge changes in the odds over the course of the cup play.

Team USA represented 85% of the bets and 90% of the Women’s World Cup handle to win the World Cup at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Interest in Team US a boon for women’s sports

FanDuel Group honored Team USA by donating  $1,000 to the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) for every goal scored during the tournament. That’s in addition to a $10,000 initial donation.

The WSF works to ensure all girls and women have equal access to sports and physical activity.
