We are … underdogs.
In early betting lines for college football, FanDuel has the Penn State University Nittany Lions as underdogs in two Big Ten matchups. In Happy Valley on Oct. 19, they are +3.5 against Michigan. On Nov. 23, the Lions face their biggest challenge and largest spread (so far) against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are 9.5 point favorites at the Horseshoe. Penn State lost their previous two games to Ohio State by one point.
The only love the Lions currently get from the oddsmakers is when they are favored (-11) at home against Purdue on Oct. 5 and (-3) versus Iowa on Oct. 12.
In FanDuel’s futures bets for the upcoming season, the Nittany Lions regular season wins are currently set at 8.5. They are +1,400 to win the Big Ten Championship and +10,000 to win the CFB Championship.
A team in transition
Penn State finished their 2018 season with a 9-4 record ranked No. 17. They lost in the Citrus Bowl, 27-24 to Kentucky. The Nittany Lions enter 2019 looking to fill a huge void at quarterback with the graduation of Trace McSorley. He is the school record holder for:
- Passing yards
- Passing touchdowns
- Total offense
- Rushing yards by a quarterback
- Rushing touchdowns by a quarterback
- Touchdowns responsible for
- Consecutive games with a touchdown pass
- 300-yard passing games
- 200-yard passing games
McSorley’s backup, quarterback Tommy Stevens, transferred to Mississippi State in May to reunite with former PSU offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. Penn State’s roster includes six quarterbacks, but only junior Sean Clifford has seen any game action (4 games played, 5-7 195 yds.). Although not a Saquan Barkley-like loss, running back Miles Sanders declared for the NFL Draft after starting one season in Happy Valley.
Other Pennsylvania college football teams
Pitt (+2.5) are underdogs at home in a matchup with UCF on Sept. 21 and road favorites (-2) against Syracuse on Oct. 18. The Panthers are +7.5 when they square off against Virginia Tech on Nov. 23.
Temple gets no brotherly love from the early lines as they are +7.5 when they travel to South Florida on Nov. 7 and +6 when they visit Cincinnati on Nov. 23.
Pitt and Temple are both +25,000 to win the CFB Championship.
