Argentina secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Zambia in an international friendly at La Bombonera on March 31, 2026, delivering a dominant performance ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Argentina controlled the game from the first kick, and Messi led the others as Argentina thrashed Zambia in the South American nation’s final game at home. Things were all going smoothly for Valentine Barco, as the team had set traps across the pitch, hoping to coax turnover out of the Zambian side. Before halftime, Messi gets on the scoresheet with Argentina securing 2 goals and Zambia with none.

The match timeline in the first half featured Julian Alvarez opening the scoring in the 4th minute following a Messi assist, while Messi doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, with a clinical finish after a one-two with Alexis Mac Allister. Nicolas Otamendi converted a penalty in the 50th minute, with Wilard Mwanza getting a touch, but he was unable to prevent the ball from soaring into the bottom left corner. Adding to the glory, it was Nicolas’s last appearance on home soil wearing Argentina’s jersey.

In the 53rd minute, Argentina makes three substitutions with Paul, Colo Barco, and Nico Gonzalez stepping in, while McAllister, Tagliafico, and Paredes leave the field. Zambia came to score in the 56th minute, but Emiliano Martinez reacted brilliantly, stopping the ball from heading straight to the net. Zambia later made changes and added O. Tembo and K. Mutandwa to the pitch, aiming to restart the attack and strengthen the defense.

An own goal by Zambia’s Dominic Chanda in the 68th minute made the scoreboard 4-0. The ball deflected off Chanda after a sequence involving Valentin Barco and Thiago Almada. The substitute Valentin Barco scored his first goal for the national team in stoppage time (90’+4’), finishing off a move assisted by Nicolas Gonzalez to complete the scoring.

Argentina sends a Clear Warning Ahead of the World Cup

Argentina’s win served as a powerful and timely response to their lackluster 2-1 win against Mauritania, significantly boosting team morale and confidence ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Thiago Almada was Argentina’s top assist provider in the match; multiple sources credited him with the setup for the first goal, which was a key moment in the victory. He was named the Man of the Match for his overall creative influence, having been credited with several key chances created throughout the 5-0 victory.

The Argentina manager, Lionel Scaloni, made several substitutions during halftime, but kept Messi on the field for the full 90 minutes. However, it is uncertain whether Messi will be playing in the World Cup, and without a doubt, Messi lived a memorable moment in his home country with the recent win.

The win also had an emotional impact, specifically because it was framed as a potential farewell to Lionel Messi on home soil. Later, the federation confirmed an international friendly against Serbia to be played between June 1 and 9 in the United States, the last match for the team before the title defense begins.

Overall, the team left the match confident, cohesive, and sending a clear warning to their World Cup rivals.
