The 2018-19 NBA Playoffs tip off on Saturday, April 13. For the first time ever anyone inside Pennsylvania can legally bet on the outcomes at sportsbooks in Pennsylvania.
That means you can sit back and watch the Philadelphia 76ers playoff run this year, or you can get up and get in on the action yourself. If they’re playing at home, one of Philadelphia’s sportsbooks, South Philadelphia Turf Club, is literally just across the parking lot, ready to accept your bets.
Of course, the NBA Playoffs is the annual best-of-seven elimination tournament held after the 82-game regular season to determine which team will hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy as NBA Champions.
The playoffs feature the top eight teams from the Eastern and Western Conferences in seeded match-ups determined by each team’s regular season record.
Betting on the NBA Playoffs is very similar to betting on the NBA during the regular season. Except that in the playoffs you can wager on the outcome of individual games, each seven-game series, and the entire NBA Playoffs.
Basic NBA Playoffs betting
In fact, all licensed PA sportsbooks offer a variety of simple and easy ways you can bet on NBA Playoff action.
Basic NBA Playoff bets available at all sportsbooks include:
How to bet on the NBA Playoffs
NBA Playoffs futures
Traditional NBA futures are bets on who will win the Conference or NBA Finals before the regular season starts.
However, Pennsylvania sportsbooks will take futures bets on all 30 NBA teams throughout the regular season and the 16 playoff teams once the regular season is through. Of course, Penn sportsbooks will adjust the odds and remove the teams eliminated from contention as the playoffs continue.
Sportsbooks will also allow futures bets on teams to win a particular series round-by-round throughout the playoffs.
NBA Playoffs moneylines
PA sportsbooks set moneylines on each individual NBA playoff game according to what oddsmakers feel are each team’s probability of winning. All you have do is pick the outright winner of the game.
The odds on each team are posted as either a negative (-) or positive (+) number. If it’s negative, that team is the favorite and that number represents how much you have to bet to win $100 plus your bet back. If the number is positive, that team is the underdog and that number represents how much each $100 you wager will pay, plus your bet back.
NBA Playoffs spreads
The spread is the number of points oddsmakers figure the favorites should win by in each NBA playoff game. The goal in betting spreads is to make the correct prediction with that line factored in.
The home team might be a -1.5 point favorite in a typical NBA Playoffs game. If you bet on the -1.5 point favorite, you win when that team wins by two points or more. Bets on the +1.5 point underdog win when that team wins outright or loses by just one point.
Sportsbooks typically make the odds on spreads -110. That means whether you like the favorite or the underdog, you’ll have to bet $110 to win $100 plus your bet back.
NBA Playoffs totals
NBA Playoffs totals are bets on whether the total number of points scored in a particular NBA Playoff game will land over or under a line.
Again, sportsbooks will typically make the odds on totals -110. That means whether you like the over or the under, you’ll have to bet $110 to win $100 plus your bet back.
NBA Playoffs parlays
You can take two or more of the basic NBA Playoffs bets described above and put them together as a part of an NBA Playoffs parlay.
Parlays pay better than individual bets, but you have to win all the bets that are a part of it for the parlay to pay anything at all.
NBA Playoffs in-play betting
Most sportsbooks also offer live in-play betting on NBA Playoff games. This allows you to make bets with odds that are adjusted throughout the game.
Live in-play betting allows you the chance to hedge your bets or recover some of your losses if things go particularly bad for your side in any game. Plus, in-play betting gives you the opportunity to maximize profits when the side you’re on is running away with things.
